The Big Red Cheating Machine

The big play in baseball yesterday was Ryan Freel’s diving catch. Or was it? After the game a few of the Pirates complained Freel didn’t actually hold onto the ball. They believed that right fielder Noris Hopper snuck the ball back into Freel’s glove before the umpire could get a good look. Finally, there is conclusive video of the play and it looks like the Pirates are right. Watch Hopper reach behind Freel’s glove—there’s some legitimate David Blaine sleight of hand going on. Hopper’s craftiness helped produce what might be the first catch in major league history ever made by an unconscious player. Instant replay anyone?

(UPDATE: Hopper has admitted putting the ball in Freel’s glove)
