The Weekly Shakedown

(Every week there are a number of stories slip through the cracks here at ShakedownSports. These are just a few of them.)

The Chilean soccer federation has suspended six players for going on a “drunken rampage” following their Copa American match against Mexico. After the 0-0 tie put Chile in the quarterfinals, coach Nelson Acosta gave his team permission to leave their hotel. When the six players returned drunk just before dawn they proceeded to destroy furniture in the hotel lobby and insult other hotel guests. An angry Jeremy Roenick is calling the federation’s punishment an extreme overreaction.

A judge has ordered Brain Urlacher and Tyna Robertson, the mother of his two year-old son, to take a parenting class in order to learn how to deal with each other. Their ongoing disputes have attracted a lot of attention ever since it was revealed that Urlacher sent Robertson numerous profane text messages. Apparently their constant arguments revolve around the fact that Robertson thinks Lance Briggs should shutup an play, while Urlacher feels the Bears are low-balling him.

Kevin Durant was unable to attend Seattle’s summer league game on Wednesday night because he was attending the taping of the ESPY’s. Sonics officials would have liked to see Durant play in the game, but they acknowledged his frail arms may have been in need of a rest after missing 27 shots in the team’s first two games.

Troy Ellerman, the attorney who leaked grand jury testimony to Game of Shadows authors Mark Fainuru-Wada and Lance Williams, has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison. The sentence is by far the harshest punishment handed out since the government began investigating steroids in sports. Still, the news isn’t all bad for Ellerman. Thanks to the millions they made from Game of Shadows, Fainuru-Wada and Williams will be able to afford sending him some really thoughtful greeting cards while he’s in prison.
