10 Things In Sports It Would Be Cool To See—#1

(Sometimes the rules and strategy involved in a game can prevent us from seeing an athlete’s true skills in action. For example, the presence of teammates can prevent repeated one-on-one confrontations, and the flow of a game can prevent an athlete from repeatedly attempting a difficult challenge. My question is, if there were no rules, no games, no standings, no teammates, and no trophies to worry about, what kind of things would an athlete be able to do. In no particular order, here are 10 things in sports I’d like to see.)

#1–Albet Pujols vs. Johan Santana…100 times

It’s one of baseballs oldest questions—who wins in a battle of good hitting vs. good pitching? The answer to that question would surely be able to help a few clueless general managers build their baseball teams. To solve this age old riddle I want to see a lengthy battle between Albert Pujols and Johan Santana.

This showdown would function the same way as Pujols’ battle against John Parrish, the worst pitcher in baseball. Pujols gets five at bats against Santana every other day for 40 days. A major league umpire is behind the plate, the showdown is held somewhere that is neither a hitters nor a pitchers park, and nine average defensive players are in the field behind Santana.

The results should finally answer the age old question regarding good hitting vs. good pitching. If Pujols still hits over .300, we’ll know that good hitting can beat good pitching. If Santana holds Pujols under .250 then the opposite will be true. If Pujols hits .270, then…well…the results are inconclusive. Whatever happens, this competition will reveal just how good these two players are, and which one can claim being the most dominant player of their era.
