The Delusions of Derek Jeter and Jose Guillen

The August heat, combined with the sore neck caused by looking up at the Red Sox all season, may have finally forced Derek Jeter to crack. After last night’s loss to the White Sox Jeter talked about winning the A.L. East, even going so far as to say “I like our chances.” The statement is so surprising only because it comes from Jeter, a guy who rarely makes outlandish predictions or says anything noteworthy to the press. One thing Jeter did not reveal in this little interview was how the team plans to overcome Boston’s eight game lead.

Jeter isn’t the only MLB player who seems to be a bit delusional. The Mariners recently called up prospect Adam Jones, a guy who was hitting .314 with 25 homers in Triple A. Still, Jose Guillen doesn’t think the Mariners offense needs that kind of help.

“this team has been good with what we have and I don’t think that’s what we need. … I just completely don’t understand that move right there.

“I don’t know what they’re trying to do,” Guillen summarized. “I hope they don’t do something stupid to mess with the lineup that we have. Because I believe we have a pretty good one.”

That lineup happens to be 10th in the A.L. in home runs and it features a right fielder (Raul Ibanez) who is hitting .254 with 6 homers. Contrary to what Guillen thinks, the team could probably find some use for Jones and .967 Triple A OPS.
