What If Sports Websites Copy Google News?

Two weeks ago Google announced that it will begin allowing people who are involved in news stories to leave comments on Google News items. So far the results have been pretty insignificant—a quick scan of the Google News front page turns up zero comments—but it got me thinking what it would be like if sports websites adopted this practice. Clearly the most important change would be that a whole world of firsthand information and analysis would be open to readers. For example, one would be able to read…

…Brady Quinn telling the Dolphins to go to hell as he gloats about throwing for 150 yards against a 3rd team defense.

…Tim Couch’s thoughts on getting cut from the Jaguars and the list of fast food restaurants he is currently applying to work at.

…Carlos Zambrano describing how much of his $91 million contract extension he plans to spend on fast food (though not at Tim Couch’s restaurant).

…Tim Donaghy’s first hand accusations that every NBA official from the last 25 years bet on games.

I think it could really work out. The best part is that because we will have already heard from those involved, there will be no more need for Stuart Scott to attempt to conduct serious interviews about breaking news in the middle of Sportscenter. That’s something all us “playa haters” can appreciate.
