The Weekly Shakedown

(Every week there are a number of stories slip through the cracks here at ShakedownSports. These are just a few of them.)

—The Braves have announced that they will cut ties with longtime center fielder Andruw Jones. That means once the playoffs end, Jones will have to sift through numerous laughably low free agent offers and find a new team. Until then he will keep himself busy with his annual “Bad Fundamentals Camp”, a two month clinic where Jones teaches kids how to catch with one hand and lunge at sliders down and away.

—The Spurs plan to retire the number of Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. The former point guard played 10 season with the Spurs and helped lead them to a title in 1999. Apparently the Spurs only decided to retire number after Johnson helped them win the 2007 Championship by allowing his top-seeded Mavericks to get upset in the first round.

—A jury has ruled against Isiah Thomas and the Knicks will be forced to pay former employee Anucha Browne Sanders $11.6 million. The money will go as a complete deadweight loss in the Knicks accounting books, but it’s still better spent than the money that went to Jerome James’ contract.

—Former Northern Colorado punter Mitch Cozad was sentenced to seven years in prison for stabbing the man ahead of him on the depth chart. Some say the punishment is fitting. O.J. Simpson says it’s “cruel, unusual, and unjust.”
