At Least Eight Belles Didn’t Have a Rape Stand

After NBC’s Saturday broadcast of equine euthanasia, that same question keeps coming back? Why is dog-fighting universally lambasted as a despicable, barbaric activity while horse racing is given a free pass?

Granted they are not the same thing (the goal of a dogfight is for the dogs to be harmed, the goal of a horse race is for no animal to be harmed). But that doesn’t change the fact that in the end, both sports force animals to do something which might leave them dead just so humans can gamble. That’s the bottom line. It’s a point which cannot be disputed.

Another point which cannot be disputed is that if dogfighting fans and its participants were rich white people with political connections, and horse racing participants were poor, urban “lowlifes,” the two sports would be looked at in a different light.

I’m not a fan of PETA. I think there are much better things to fight for in this world than getting animals equal (or in some cases) better rights than humans. But it’s time that horse racing stopped getting a free pass.

A Really Long Longshot

Georgia Bay is a three-year old filly. Last week she entered a race as a 322-1 longshot…and won. A $2 win ticket paid $666.20.

What I want to know is how in the world a horse that was such a longshot was even allowed in the race? And how could she be such a longshot? Was Shaq her jockey? Did she have only three legs? The odds on Georgia Bay winning were about the same as the Dolphins beating the Patriots in New England…twice in a row.  Just think about that for a second.  A goat seems like it would be better than 322-1 to win a horse race.

Anyway, congratulation to Georgia Bay and her owners. You have the best terrible horse on the planet.

Peter Forsberg Has Himself A Horse

It seems like every talented racehorse is owned by a sophisticated southern gentleman, a rich businessman, a wealthy Middle East prince, or a lovable group of old high school friends pooling their money together for one shot at glory. Peter Forsberg is doing his best to add hockey players to that list.

Forsberg is lucky the owner of Adrian Chip, a 3 year-old colt who finished 2nd in Saturday’s $1.5 million Hambletonian at the Meadowlands. Forsberg originally bought the horse from a German trainer it quickly became a star when he moved it to Sweden. Now he’s brought the horse back to America to race in some more high profile races.

While Adrian Chip wasn’t able to win the Hambletonian, he also didn’t have to leave with an injury, and in Forsberg’s book that counts as a success.
